General Information
Department of Geological Engineering was established in 1992, and had the first graduates of BSc. degree in 1992. Every year, 40 undergraduate students have been accepted to the program with student selection and placement exam (OSYS).The department presents 4 years of education program to give a degree of History. There are currently over 990 students studying at History Department. The Department consists of the following major branches: Mineralogy & Petrography, Ore Deposits & Geochemistry, General Geology, and Applied Geology.
The department is designed to provide the fundamentals of contemporary geological engineering education. The first year of courses mainly consists of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and information technologies, to bring the knowledge level of students with different backgrounds to the same level. The compulsory courses offered in second, third, and fourth years include branch courses. The fourth year of curriculum includes elective courses. The Diploma Project undertaken in the fourth year places an emphasis on the introduction to Research and Development and is submitted as a thesis. For all compulsory and elective courses there are written examinations, in which most cases student must solve selected problems by calculation. The midterm examinations are compacted and given in a specified week of the semester. Student assessment methods are separately proposed for each course, being based on regular exams, open-book exams, reports, seminar presentations or individual oral discussions, and performance in laboratory work or field activities. Students spend six weeks (30 working days) in industry for their summer training and two weeks for field camping at the end of the 6th semester.
